Chinese national resident in Kano, Frank Geng-Quangrong, has been sentenced to death by hanging by the Kano State High Court.

The Chinese, aged 47, was convicted of a one count charge of culpable homicide.

Delivering judgment, yesterday, Justice Sanusi Ado-Ma’aji agreed with the prosecution, adding that the testimony of the defendant was inconsistent.

“I, hereby, recommend mercy by the Kano State Governor on behalf of the convict,” he added.

It would be recalled that in the course of the proceedings, the prosecution counsel, Haruna Dederi, had informed the court that the convict committed the offence on September 16, 2022, at Janbulo Quarters Kano. He recalled that on the same date, at about 9pm, the convict stabbed the deceased with a knife in her house, situated at Janbulo Quarters Kano, for undisclosed reason.

“The victim was rushed to the Murtala Muhammad Specialists Hospital, Kano, where she was confirmed dead by a medical doctor”.

At the court, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge. On the contrary, the prosecution presented six witnesses to prove their case against the defendant, along with four exhibits.

The prosecutor also said the offence contravened the provision of Section 221(b) of the penal code.

On his part, the defence counsel, Muhummad Dan’azumi, presented one other witness and tendered five exhibits. He urged the court to recommend the defendant for the prerogative of mercy pursuant to Section 313 of ACJL.

Frank had, in his testament, averred that he did not intentionally kill his girlfriend, adding that he stabbed her in self defence after she had grabbed his manhood, while pleading with the judge to temper justice with mercy.

Speaking shortly after the judgment, the victims mother, Hajiya Fatima Zubairu, expressed satisfaction with the judge’s decision.
