According to Punch, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) released a list on Monday identifying over 9,000 ground rent defaulters and urged them to clear their debts for 2023 within two weeks. The FCTA cautioned that failure to comply would result in the forfeiture of their land titles.

“The FCTA reminds all allottees and title holders of land within the Federal Capital Territory of their obligations to pay annual ground rent in advance, as stipulated in the Statutory Rights of Occupancy/Certificate of Occupancy,” the announcement stated. It advised all property owners who have not settled their outstanding ground rent for 2023 to ensure payment within two weeks, or face title revocation.

Among the officials named were former Minister of Aviation Hadi Sirika, former Minister of Finance Kemi Adeosun, former Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele, and former Federal Commissioner of Internal Affairs Umaru Shinkafi. Additional names included former Governors Rotimi Amaechi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Isa Yuguda, and Donald Duke.

Several Ministries, Departments, and Agencies were also cited for owing ground rents, including the Federal Housing Authority, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, and Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria.

In November 2023, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike extended the payment deadline for ground rents to December 2023, warning that consequences would follow for non-compliance. Wike emphasized that the directive was not an empty threat after the initial deadline expired in September.

FCT Director of Information Muhammad Sule noted that the administration expected to collect about N30 billion from ground rent payments. He explained that the extension aimed to accommodate those still in the process of paying their dues.
