The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is mourning the tragic loss of one of its officers, Assistant Superintendent of the EFCC, ASE II Aminu Sahabi Salisu, who was killed in cold blood while performing his official duties on January 17, 2025.
He was fatally shot by suspected internet fraudster Joshua Chukwubueze Ikechukwu.
The Commission is deeply disturbed by the reckless, callous, and inhumane narratives circulating on social media regarding the incident. It is abhorrent to reduce the death of a dedicated officer, who was executing patriotic and official duties, to sensationalised online commentary.
More troubling is the fact that some individuals are aligning themselves with the alleged criminal responsible for the attack on EFCC officers during their lawful operation. There is no justification for rationalizing such a murderous act. In times of grief, the Commission urges the public to show respect and refrain from spreading falsehoods and conjectures about the circumstances surrounding the officer’s death.
Salisu, along with fellow EFCC investigators, was part of a team that arrived at Dr. J.O. Ukwutinife Close in Ifite, Awka, Anambra State, early on January 17 to arrest suspected internet fraudsters. The operation was carried out in full compliance with operational protocols, including documentation at the Anambra State Command Headquarters and the Nigeria Police Area Command.
The operation began smoothly, with 37 suspected fraudsters arrested at a two-story building where Ikechukwu and others were residing.

However, Ikechukwu, who spotted the investigators through a CCTV camera at his door, refused to open the door despite their polite request for entry. Instead, he opened fire on the officers, killing Salisu and injuring another officer who had been assigned to search his apartment.
Preliminary investigations reveal that Ikechukwu was involved in the illegal coding and distribution of online medical supplies.
Several electronic devices, including two laptops, iPads, and recording equipment, were seized from his apartment, establishing his role in internet fraud. Ikechukwu is currently in police custody due to the violent nature of his actions, and the EFCC is determined to bring him to justice.
The EFCC also warns the public about the growing threat posed by internet fraudsters. These criminals are increasingly involved in activities such as kidnapping, banditry, ritual killings, and other dangerous crimes. It is crucial for the public to recognize the severity of these threats and not underestimate the scale of harm they cause.
The Commission reaffirms its commitment to ensuring that any future attacks on its officers will be met with the full force of the law. The EFCC will not stand idly by while its officers are targeted and killed in cold blood. As a prominent law enforcement agency, the EFCC remains relentless in its fight against internet fraud and corruption.
In this moment of mourning for its fallen officer, the EFCC extends its heartfelt gratitude to the sister agencies and individuals who have shown their support, offered condolences, and stood in solidarity during this difficult time.
