In the closing hours of his tenure, President Joe Biden has granted clemency to General Mark Milley, Anthony Fauci, and lawmakers who participated in the congressional investigation into the events of January 6.
This move comes in response to President-elect Donald Trump’s earlier pledge to seek vengeance against individuals he believed opposed his initial administration.
Biden emphasised in a formal statement, “Our country depends on the unwavering dedication and altruism of its public servants every single day. They are the backbone of our democracy.
“However, it is deeply troubling that public servants have faced persistent threats and harassment simply for carrying out their responsibilities with integrity.”
Biden was careful to clarify that the clemency grants did not imply culpability.
“The granting of these pardons should not be interpreted as an acknowledgement that any individual committed any misconduct, nor should acceptance of clemency be seen as an admission of guilt for any offence.
“These public servants have earned our nation’s gratitude for their unwavering devotion to the United States,” he wrote.
