Nigerian Navy’s Forward Operating Base in Ibaka, Akwa Ibom, has arrested two individuals suspected of stealing a large quantity of premium motor spirit.

The suspects were apprehended on January 24 during a routine patrol along the Mbo River area.

According to Commanding Officer Capt. Aliyu Abdullahi, the navy personnel intercepted a wooden boat carrying the stolen petrol, which was concealed under cargo.

The suspects allegedly planned to smuggle the petrol from Nigeria to Cameroon.

The Nigerian Navy has vowed to continue fighting waterway crime, using advanced surveillance equipment and intelligence to detect and prevent criminal activities.

The suspects have been handed over to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) for prosecution after thorough investigations.

Capt. Abdullahi warned that the navy would remain committed to fighting maritime crimes, making it impossible for such activities to continue in the waterways and coastal areas of Akwa Ibom.

“We shall continue to detect criminals and their activities within the nation’s waterways through the use of advanced surveillance equipment and intelligence.

“Individuals or groups involved in smuggling or any form of criminal activity within Nigeria’s waters should desist immediately,” he said.

Receiving the suspects and Items, ASC Willie Emediong, said that the NSCDC would prosecute the suspects after thorough investigations on the matter.
