Cardiff University in Wales, United Kingdom, is set to cut 400 full-time jobs as part of efforts to address a significant funding shortfall.
The proposed measures include potential school and subject closures and mergers, with nursing, music, and modern languages among the areas at risk of being discontinued.
The University and College Union has vowed to fight the plans for compulsory redundancies, however, the university has stated that such measures would only be taken “if absolutely necessary.”

Vice-Chancellor Professor Wendy Larner explained that continuing the current course was no longer viable.
“It is no longer an option for us to continue as we are,” she said, emphasising the need for tough decisions due to “declining international student applications, increasing cost pressures, and the need to adapt to survive.”
Larner also acknowledged the distress the proposals would cause, stating, “I know that these proposals impact some staff more than others and they will cause a great deal of uncertainty and anxiety for those potentially impacted.”
