As part of efforts to address the challenge of climate change and promote irrigation farming, Heifer Nigeria, on Tuesday, launched a Solar Powered Irrigation Pump (SPIP), in Ogun State, to promote food sufficiency.

The Country Director of Heifer Nigeria, Dr Lekan Tobe, in his opening remarks at the launch programme held in Abeokuta, said the objective of the project was to end hunger, and poverty through all-year-round farming.

He explained that the project was conceived as a result of the removal of fuel subsidy which practically made some farmers abandon farming, considering the high cost of buying fuel to power their machines to water their crops.

Tobe said the initiative would cover about 168 farmers for the pilot scheme, with high hopes to expand for other farmers to benefit.

He, therefore, encouraged the beneficiaries of the pilot scheme to adhere to the conditions set up for repayment.

Tobe said, “The solar-powered irrigation pump also offers environmental benefits by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change.

“Unpredictable weather and prolonged dry seasons have worsened farming conditions, but this technology provides a reliable solution.”

He added that the primary goal is to support the government and people of Nigeria, especially in the area of import substitution.

The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Ogun Oshun River Basin Development Authority, Engr Adedeji Ashiru, lauded the initiative saying the SPIP program, would make a positive impact on the lives of Nigerians.

Adedeji represented by the Executive Director of Agricultural Services, Mr Alamu Noah, said agriculture is key to combat many of the global challenges.

“It is through our collective efforts that we can create a future where agriculture is not only a means of sustenance but also a catalyst for Economic growth, social development, and environmental stewardship.

“I want to use this medium to urge all the participants in this SPIP program, to embrace this opportunity with enthusiasm and determination, as you acquire knowledge that empowers you to make positive impacts on your lives and the lives of others, so as to make a difference,” he added.

Mr. Oyeniyi Oyelekan of the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), said the initiative would no doubt increase food production and also bring down the cost of food production.
