Post-legislative scrutiny key to democratic growth — Oyo Assembly

Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin has underscored the relevance of the Post-Legislative Scrutiny to the sustenance of Democratic rule in the Country.

Ogundoyin made this known at the official inauguration of a newly established Post-Legislative Unit in Oyo State House of Assembly and Oyo State Ministry of Justice in Ibadan on Wednesday.

The Speaker who described the location of the unit at the Assembly Complex as a welcome development submitted that it would complement the efforts of the lawmakers.

He added that aside from the passage of bills into law, lawmakers must ensure that the laws are effectively implemented and remain relevant in addressing societal needs.

According to him, “Post-Legislative Scrutiny provides us with a structured approach to reviewing the performance of our laws, identifying gaps, and making necessary improvements.

“The establishment of this Unit would not have been possible without the unwavering support of our partners, particularly the National Institute for Democratic and Legislative Studies (NILDS) and most importantly, the Westminster Foundation for Democracy.

“With this Unit now fully established, our Assembly is positioned to lead in ensuring that laws passed by this House translate into real benefits for our people.

“I, therefore, call on all stakeholders, legislators, government agencies, Civil Society Organizations, and the public to engage actively in this process as we Institutionalize evidence-based policy making and strengthen governance in Oyo state”

Speaking in the same vein, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Hon. Abiodun Aikomo tasked the lawmakers with impactful legislation that would be of immense benefit to the people.

Aikomo who was represented at the occasion by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Justice, Olubunmi Are said with the establishment of PLIS, the performance of the lawmakers and effectiveness of the laws passed would be assessed.

In his welcome address, the Director General of NILDS, Prof. Abubakar Sulaiman harped on the need for impactful legislation.

He described the impactful legislation as yardstick for the measurement of the performance of the lawmakers.
