The Sokoto State Police Command has announced that it will begin full enforcement of the third-party motor vehicle insurance policy from February 1, 2025.

This move complies with directives from the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, and aligns with the Insurance Act and the Motor Vehicle (Third-Party Insurance) Act, which require all vehicle owners to have at least third-party insurance coverage.

According to a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmad Rufai, said the command has observed that a significant number of vehicles in Sokoto State lack proper insurance coverage.

The statement reads, “Reports from the Nigeria Insurance Association highlight the growing concern over uninsured vehicles, which pose challenges to road safety and accident victim compensation.

“To ensure strict compliance, the Sokoto State Police Command has set up an enforcement team comprising security agencies and a mobile court.

“The team will be responsible for verifying vehicle insurance status and taking necessary legal action against defaulters.”

He highlights some of the benefits of third-party insurance, which include, providing compensation to victims of road accidents and covering injuries and damages sustained during travel.

“Strengthening the insurance industry and creating employment opportunities for Nigerian youths as well as promoting a responsible driving culture”

The command however urged all vehicle owners in the state to obtain valid third-party insurance before the deadline to avoid legal consequences.

The Command reiterated its commitment to road safety and ensuring that all motorists comply with the law.

“Vehicle owners who fail to obtain the necessary insurance coverage by the February 1 deadline risk facing enforcement actions, including fines and legal proceedings,” the statement added.
