‘May God bless you’: Biden’s ‘inspirational’ outgoing letter to Trump revealed

Former President Joe Biden left a letter for President Donald Trump, praying for him “May God bless you.” 

Trump described the letter as “very nice,” calling it an “inspirational” message that highlighted the importance of the presidential role.

Trump disclosed the letter Monday evening while speaking with reporters. He opened a drawer in the Resolute Desk and found the letter sealed in a small white envelope with the number “47” written and underlined on the front. 

“It could have been years before we found this thing. Wow, thank you,” Trump said, expressing his surprise and appreciation.

In the letter, Biden wrote: “As I take leave of this sacred office, I wish you and your family all the best in the next four years. The American people – and people around the world – look to this house for steadiness in the inevitable storms of history, and my prayer is that in the coming years will be a time of prosperity, peace, and grace for our nation.”

Biden concluded the letter with a prayer, “May God bless you and guide you as He has blessed and guided our beloved country since our founding.”

Trump said the letter felt uplifting, saying, “Just basically, it was a little bit of an inspirational type of letter, you know? ‘Joy, do a good job. Important, very important, how important the job is.’ But I may, I think it was a nice letter.”

This letter from Biden continues a long-standing tradition where outgoing presidents leave a note for their successors. 

Trump had also followed this practice in 2020 when he left a letter for Biden upon his departure. Reflecting on his return to the Oval Office, Trump added, “What a great feeling, one of the better feelings I’ve ever had.”
