Three Northern regions contributed N540.31bn — received N1.39trn from VAT pool in 2024

The three Northern regions in Nigeria collectively contributed N540.31 billion to the country’s Value Added Tax (VAT) pool in 2024 and received an allocation of N1.39 trillion, significantly outpacing their contribution.

According to data compiled by Agora Policy, a Nigerian think tank focused on solving national challenges, the Northern states benefited from a higher allocation-to-contribution ratio.

The North West recorded the highest contribution among the Northern regions, with N211.27 billion, while receiving N574.32 billion in allocations.

The North East followed with a contribution of N174.50 billion and an allocation of N411.84 billion, while the North Central contributed N154.54 billion and received N408.66 billion.

Official figures indicate that VAT revenue for 2024 surged by 85%, increasing from N3.64 trillion in 2023 to N6.72 trillion.
