A devastating explosive incident occurred on Sunday in Sabon Pegi, Mashegu Local Government Area of Niger, resulting in the loss of three lives and injuring several others.
According to the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), the incident was caused by a Nakiya explosive kept in a rented apartment by a local artisan miner, Yushehu.
The apartment, located behind the Central Mosque of Sabon Pegi, was rented by Yushehu for his workers.
The explosive incident occurred at around 7:30 am, affecting over 40 houses and buildings, as well as parked vehicles nearby.
NSEMA’s Director General, Hon. Abdullahi Baba Arah, confirmed that rescue operations were coordinated by NSEMA desk officers from Mashegu and Borgu Local Government Areas, who are still on the scene conducting a comprehensive assessment of the incident.
The incident highlights the importance of proper storage and handling of explosives to prevent such tragedies.
Investigations are likely to follow to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
