UNILORIN VC harps on AI deployment in education

Vice Chancellor of University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), Professor Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, has stressed the importance of deployment of Artificial Intelligence in the education sector.

He described the theme for this year›s International Day of Education held on January 24 that focused on the usefulness of Artificial Intelligence in the education sector as appropriate and forward-looking.

In a statement issued by the university›s Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr Kunle Akogun, the vice chancellor mentioned that the theme ‘AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation’ perfectly aligned with the institution’s agenda in the area of Artificial Intelligence.

Pointing out that the university recognises the critical role education plays in preparing future leaders to navigate the evolving landscape; the vice chancellor reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to equip students with right knowledge and skills to harness AI’s potentials for societal progress.

He disclosed that the university recently trained 21 of its students on the use of AI with plans to sponsor about 500 more in due course.

He explained that the training was aimed at encouraging the beneficiaries to acquire and expand needed skills in the exploration and deployment of AI for innovations and future career progression.

The VC mentioned that the university has been vigorously promoting excellence in education and community development and currently running a SMART Agenda, using tech to enhance teaching, learning, and research.

He added that plans are underway to establish a Centre for AI even as the Centre for Cyber security and COMSIT are currently coordinating the AI endeavours of the university.
