Police Foil Robbery in Enugu, Arrest Man with Fake Firearm

The Enugu State Police Command on Monday prevented an armed robbery and arrested 28-year-old Chimuanya Oshim near Agric Bank Bus Stop, Independence Layout, in Enugu metropolis.

The Command’s spokesman, SP Daniel Ndukwe, confirmed the development in a statement, noting that operatives recovered an imitation firearm with ammunition during the operation, the News Agency of Nigeria reported.

“The suspect, Chimuanya Oshim, 28, was arrested on December 13, around 11:30pm, while attempting to rob members of the public.

“The arrest followed a prompt response to a distress call by operatives attached to the Independence Layout Police Division.

“At the scene, operatives caught the suspect robbing a young man and recovered a revolver imitation pistol loaded with eight toy bullets.

“The suspect remains in custody and will be arraigned after investigations are concluded,” Ndukwe said.

He added that Commissioner of Police, Mamman Giwa, urged officers to sustain the momentum and make Enugu uninhabitable for unrepentant criminals.

“The commissioner urged residents to support policing with timely, credible information to aid crime prevention and detection,” he said.

PUNCH Online reported on Saturday that Enugu Police Command also announced the arrest of six suspected cult members in the state.

According to Ndukwe, the suspects, who have confessed to their involvement in cult activities, were arrested by the Anti-Cultism Unit of the command while attempting to force people to be initiated into the Supreme Vikings Confraternity.

He said several items used for the initiation were recovered, including a gun, cutlasses, and alcoholic drinks.

The arrest comes less than a week after the command apprehended five suspects linked to armed robbery and “one-chance” criminal activities in coordinated operations carried out between November 22 and December 1, 2025.

The suspects—19-year-old Ikechukwu Patrick, 21-year-old Odoh David, 37-year-old Izuchukwu Ogbodo, 39-year-old Charles Ekenechukwu Egwuatu, and 37-year-old Justina Dike- were arrested following intelligence-led operations by the Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad.
