The impeached Speaker of the House, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, of the Lagos State House of Assembly and two lawmakers were absent at the inaugural plenary presided over by the newly elected Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda.

The absentee lawmakers included former Majority Leader, Hon. Noheem Adams, and Hon. Nureni Akinsanya.

During the plenary, lawmakers including Hon. Bola Shabi, Hon. Desmond Elliot, Hon. Olumoh Lukman, and Hon. Olotu Emmanuel pledged allegiance to the new Speaker and also apologised for being unavoidably absent during the impeachment proceedings.

They announced their willingness to append their signatures to the list of lawmakers that impeached the former Speaker.

Addressing the House, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda pledged her administration’s commitment to uniting the House and not dwelling on past controversies or disagreements.

She pledged to open a new chapter in the history of the State Assembly.

She said, “I want to assure you that our administration will focus on working together for a better Lagos. We will work harmoniously with other arms of government to ensure a seamless delivery of dividends of democracy to Lagosians irrespective of gender, education, religion, and ethnicity.

We will ensure we maintain the sanctity between us and the other arms of government. This is crucial in regards to effective government and democratic development.

To achieve this, we must commit to maintaining open lines of communication with the executive arm, led by Mr Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to foster a spirit of cooperation and mutual respect in our relations with one another.

By doing so, we can and must ensure that our state actions are aligned with the executive vision for a better state, for the good people of the state so that we all can leave the state far better than we met it.

We will prioritise leaving the past behind and forging ahead. We will not dwell on past controversies or disagreements, but instead focus on the great and pressing ahead, which is delivering better services to the people of Lagos.”
