Four injured as storey building collapses in Ondo

A storey building, under construction, located along Oyemekun Road in Akure, the Ondo State capital, on Tuesday, collapsed as no fewer than four people were reportedly injured.

It was gathered that the injured were the construction workers working at the building site.

An eyewitness narrated that a part of the building, whose construction started a few months ago, suddenly collapsed on Tuesday evening while work was going on.

The eyewitness said, ” We just suddenly heard the sound, and dust was raised at the site. So immediately, sympathisers rushed down there and rescued four of the construction workers who were trapped. But they have been rushed to the hospital.”

In a reaction, the state Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr Sunday Olajide, who confirmed the incident, said an investigation would be launched to uncover both the immediate and long-term causes of the incident.

Olajide warned building developers in the state against the use of substandard building materials, urging them to prioritize the safety of residents.

Meanwhile, the government was said to have sealed off the construction site pending the outcome of the investigation.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, when contacted, said he had not got information about the incident as at the time of filing this report.

” I will get back to you as soon as I get the details. I don’t have the details yet,” the PPRO stated.
