As preparations intensify for the forthcoming Ekiti State governorship election, the Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) in charge of the South-West geopolitical zone, Adegoke Fayoade, has assured residents and stakeholders of the readiness of security agencies to guarantee a peaceful, credible, and violence-free poll.
The DIG gave the assurance during a strategic visit to Ekiti State, where he assessed security arrangements and engaged key stakeholders ahead of the crucial election.
The visit forms part of the Nigeria Police Force’s broader efforts to strengthen electoral security and ensure that all necessary measures are in place to safeguard lives, property, and the integrity of the democratic process.
As part of his itinerary, DIG Fayoade paid a courtesy visit to the Ewi of Ado-Ekiti, His Royal Majesty, Oba Rufus Adeyemo Adejugbe Aladesanmi III, where discussions focused on maintaining peace, public order, and security before, during, and after the election.
Speaking during the visit, the DIG emphasized the critical role traditional rulers play in fostering stability and promoting peaceful coexistence within their communities.
He noted that traditional institutions remain invaluable partners in intelligence gathering, conflict resolution, and community policing, particularly during election periods when tensions often rise.
According to him, collaboration between security agencies and traditional leaders is essential to preventing violence and ensuring that residents participate freely in the electoral process.
DIG Fayoade also commended the Ewi of Ado-Ekiti for his commitment to peace and development, describing him as a respected leader whose influence continues to contribute positively to security efforts in the state.
Responding, Oba Adejugbe expressed confidence in the preparedness of security agencies and pledged the continued support of traditional institutions in maintaining peace throughout the election period.
The monarch urged political actors, their supporters, and residents to conduct themselves responsibly and uphold democratic values, stressing that peaceful elections are vital to the state’s progress.
Following the palace engagement, the DIG proceeded to the Ekiti State Police Command Headquarters, where he inspected operational facilities and assessed the command’s readiness for election duties.
He also delivered a strategic lecture to officers and men of the command, emphasizing professionalism, neutrality, discipline, and strict adherence to electoral security guidelines.
Addressing the personnel, DIG Fayoade reminded them that public confidence in the electoral process largely depends on the conduct of security officers deployed for election operations.
He charged the officers to remain vigilant and impartial while ensuring the protection of voters, electoral officials, and election materials, adding that intelligence-led policing and inter-agency collaboration would be critical to achieving a peaceful poll.
The visit concluded h renewed assurances from security authorities, traditional institutions, and community leaders of their collective commitment to safeguarding democracy and creating a secure environment for Ekiti residents to freely exercise their civic responsibilities during the governorship election.
