Abducted Anambra medical doctor regains freedom

A medical doctor at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, Dr Cornelius Onuigbo, who was abducted by some yet-to-be-identified armed men on Tuesday, has regained his freedom.

Onuigbo, who was abducted in front of his house in Nnewi while returning from work was released in the early hours of Thursday, after spending two nights in the hands of his captors.

His release was confirmed by his colleagues at the Urology Department of the hospital and the Head of Corporate Affairs of NAUTH, Martina Onwuka.

Although, details of his release have not been fully ascertained and it could not also be ascertained if any ransom was paid before his release or whether he escaped from his captors.

Nigerian Tribune gathered that his release sent wild jubilating at the premises of NAUTH on Thursday as staff members and doctors sang praises to God when the news of his release was broken at the institution.

One of his colleagues in the Urology department, who spoke to our correspondent, but on the condition of anonymity as he was not authorised to do so, also confirmed the development.

He said, “We thank God that he has been released and we are not yet sure if any ransom was paid or not. And we cannot also confirm if he was hurt or not but there is nobody that will go through such a harrowing experience that will be unhurt.

“The psychological trauma is enough hurt than bodily injury but we thank God that he has reunited with his family. We thank God for saving his life.”

The State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga has also confirmed the doctor released.
