This week, President Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th president of the United States of America. Due to Trump’s ‘America First’ stance, Africa and African governments are not certain of their fates in their economic and diplomatic relations with Trump’s America. Kingsley Alumona and Yusuf Abdulkadir sampled the opinions of some Nigerians on this issue. Their views:

Hashim Yussuf

Donald Trump’s presidency would have significant implications for Nigeria and Africa. From an economic angle, his ‘America First’ policy and protectionist tendencies may lead to a decline in global trade, and this will affect African countries’ reliance on exports. A trade war involving major trading partners could also lead to growth-dampening effects and disrupt supply chains. Although some African countries may benefit from President Trump’s anti-BRICS stance — this, most likely, would open doors for these capitalist African countries and markets, who are also loyal allies to America, to fill the void in global supply chains.

Anthony Aladekomo

I believe that Donald Trump’s presidency will positively impact Nigeria and Africa. Only potential illegal immigrants need to panic over his plan to discourage illegal immigration. Let Nigerians and Africans utilise the opportunity to use their own enormous resources to develop their fatherlands. Unlike the Obama and Biden administrations which were bent on forcing LGBTQ ideology down the throats of African leaders and Africans, Trump’s policies align with the aversion of African culture and morality to LGBTQ. What is more, President Trump is very committed to counter-terrorism. Nigeria and Africa need him, at least for that.

Ahmed Bukar

Another President Donald Trump’s term might not bring drastic shifts in United States-Africa relations compared to his first. The real impact, however, could come from the economic tremors of a trade war, should Trump’s tariff-heavy approach ignite global conflicts. In terms of Africa, the results would likely be indirect but consequential. Besides, the discussion of Africa was almost completely absent from this year’s United States presidential campaign. That might lead Africans to expect nothing of substance from the administration of President Trump.

Abdulsalam Mubarak

Donald Trump’s presidency signals a lack of regard for African leaders, evident from the absence of any African representatives at his inauguration. This is not tyranny — rather, a logical move to push African leaders to be more accountable to their citizens. However, his policies would likely have a negative impact on Nigeria and Africa at large. His harsh immigration policies will result in deportations, further exacerbating poverty. Additionally, the United States withdrawal from the World Health Organisation (WHO) will harm Africa, given how much it relies on the organisation’s support. Other future policies will likely bring similar detrimental consequences.

Moses Adewole

I believe Trump’s presidency would help many African leaders — and, most especially, Nigeria — to be more focused because the era of free money through donations or aid would stop for a while. Secondly, his presidency would reduce the menace of illegal ‘japa’ and offer opportunities for African leaders to maximise their human resources and develop their countries.

AbdulAzeez AbdulMaleek

Donald Trump’s presidency may yet prove to be a catalyst for a new world order, one in which peace and economic prosperity finally take root. I believe that global conflicts would subside, and Nigeria and Africa’s businesses and economy would flourish, unencumbered by the shadows of global wars. And, in a refreshing twist, Africa may discover a newfound autonomy, as America’s gaze under President Trump turns inward to focus on America’s interests. I think this would be a real global leadership.

Oche Simon

Donald Trump’s presidency is poised to influence Nigeria and Africa through a multifaceted approach encompassing economic policies, security cooperation, immigration reforms, and diplomatic engagements. Trump’s ‘America First’  stance suggests a shift towards transactional relationships that will potentially affect trade dynamics with African nations. His stringent immigration policies previously led to travel restrictions for several African countries, including Nigeria. African nations need to proactively assert their interests to navigate this evolving geopolitical landscape effectively.

Olafimihan Sherifdeen

Due to the ‘god-like’ position of the United States in the comity of nations, the administration of President Donald Trump could impact a lot in areas such as economic and trade relations, global security and counter-terrorism among others. However, with some of the executive orders he has signed and other policies he might later execute, I would like Africa, especially Nigeria, to rigorously shift and diversify its global partnership and foreign relations beyond the United States.
