The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has said that the Federal Government and the National Assembly are committed to restoring Nigeria as one of the most peaceful and secure countries in Africa.
Akpabio was represented by the Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate, Peter Nwebonyi, at the Inter-Denominational Church Service for the Armed Forces Remembrance Day 2026, held in Abuja on Sunday.
He said the government was focused on building a peaceful and secure environment that would allow present and future generations to thrive.
“Let me assure you that the Federal Government, in collaboration with the National Assembly, is committed and resolute in its efforts to restore Nigeria as one of the most peaceful and secure nations in Africa.
“The sacrifices we commemorate today strengthen our resolve to build a safer, stronger and more united Nigeria,” Akpabio said.
He also highlighted the constitutional guarantees of freedom of religion, worship and conscience, describing them as pillars of Nigeria’s democracy that must be upheld to ensure peaceful coexistence.
“Ranked among the most linguistically diverse countries in the world, with over 500 languages spoken, Nigeria is home to people of different cultures, faiths and traditions.
“We are Christians, Muslims and adherents of traditional beliefs, united under one flag and one destiny. Our Constitution guarantees freedom of religion, freedom of worship and freedom of conscience.
“These freedoms are the pillars upon which our democracy stands, and they must be protected at all times,” he said.
Akpabio paid tribute to members of the Armed Forces who lost their lives in the line of duty, saying their sacrifices remain a foundation for the country’s unity, peace and progress.
He added that the decisions and actions taken by leaders today would shape the future of the nation, noting that Nigeria’s stability and security are central to the well-being of future generations.
Also speaking, the Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (retd.), said President Bola Tinubu was committed to ensuring that the Armed Forces and other security agencies are adequately equipped, properly motivated and well cared for, to enable them to discharge their constitutional responsibilities effectively and professionally.
“His actions speak volumes about the value he places on service and sacrifice.
“We pray that Almighty God continues to grant him wisdom, strength and guidance as he leads our great nation,” Musa said.
The minister said that Nigeria was indeed passing through challenging times but expressed optimism that the country would overcome them.
He thanked Tinubu for his unwavering support and commitment to the welfare of troops and their families.
