The Independent National Electoral Commission has said that a total of 4,423 new voters have so far registered in Anambra State within four weeks of the ongoing Continuous Voters Registration exercise.

The Anambra State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr Elizabeth Agwu, disclosed this during a media briefing with journalists at the commission’s state headquarters in Awka, on Wednesday.

Agwu said the forum served as a platform to deepen collaboration between INEC and the media, with an emphasis on combating misinformation, promoting voter education, and fostering public trust in the electoral process.

She added that the registration exercise is currently ongoing across the 21 local government areas of the state, adding that the briefing is aimed at addressing key electoral matters and ongoing activities concerning the exercise.

She expressed satisfaction with the figure recorded so far during the review period, adding that the exercise is for the upcoming 2027 general elections.

She emphasised the vital role of the media in safeguarding democracy and promoting credible elections, noting that while INEC bears the constitutional mandate to conduct elections, media professionals are indispensable partners in delivering accurate and balanced information to the public.

She said, “This briefing is aimed at addressing key electoral matters and ongoing activities concerning the commission.

“A total of 4,423 new voters have so far registered in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration exercise in Anambra State within four weeks.

“The success recorded so far is a result of the collaborative support the Commission is getting from other relevant stakeholders, particularly political parties and the media.

“The Commission under my watch in Anambra State is highly impressed with the exercise, and we believe that at the end of the ongoing nationwide registration, we are expected to be among the states with a higher number of voters.

“The registration started from January 5, and it’s expected to end April 17, 2026.

“We encourage the media to remain balanced in their reporting. Your neutrality matters. Sometimes only one person knows you are being fair; others may not, but keep doing what’s right.”

Agwu urged the residents aged 18 and above to come out en masse and register as soon as possible to avoid a last-minute rush.

The Commissioner expressed satisfaction over the conduct of the November 8, 2025, governorship election, describing the exercise as the best election held so far in the country.

“The Anambra State governorship election was conducted successfully, and it has been described as the best election so far. There was no record of any glitch. All the results were uploadedin  real time as they were coming in.

“Making elections better is a continuous process, and with technology, electoral malpractices such as rigging and other vices are being tackled and in the next election, we will witness a lot of improvements in the system.”

She also announced that Permanent Voter Cards from the recently concluded Continuous Voter Registration are available for collection at the various local government levels.
