Kebbi State Governor, Dr Nasir Idris, has approved the appointment of Muhammad Musa as the pioneer Provost of the newly established Kauran Gwandu College of Midwifery Science, Ambursa, in a move aimed at strengthening healthcare training and improving maternal health services in the state.
The appointment was conveyed in a letter signed by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Higher Education, Dr Suwaiba Salihu, on Thursday and made available to journalists.
According to the letter, the appointment was made strictly on merit.
Salihu congratulated Musa on his well-deserved appointment and urged him to justify the confidence reposed in him.
“I am pleased to inform you that His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kebbi State, Comrade Dr Nasir Idris, has approved your appointment as Provost of Kauran Gwandu College of Midwifery Science, Ambursa,” the letter stated.
She further charged the new provost to demonstrate dedication, diligence and commitment in the discharge of his duties, noting that the success of the institution would depend largely on effective leadership at its formative stage.
The establishment of the College of Midwifery Science forms part of the Idris administration’s broader drive to expand access to quality healthcare education, address manpower gaps in the health sector and improve maternal and child health outcomes across Kebbi State.
The appointment takes immediate effect.
PUNCH Online reports that Kebbi State has recorded persistent challenges in maternal and child healthcare delivery, including shortages of trained midwives, particularly in rural communities.
According to data from the Federal Ministry of Health and the National Demographic and Health Survey, Nigeria continues to rank among countries with high maternal mortality ratios, with northern states disproportionately affected.
In response, the Kebbi State Government has intensified investments in health infrastructure and manpower development since 2023, including the establishment of new health training institutions, recruitment of medical personnel and rehabilitation of primary healthcare centres.
The Kauran Gwandu College of Midwifery Science, Ambursa, is one of the specialised institutions created to boost the training of skilled midwives, improve access to maternal healthcare services and support the state’s alignment with national and global maternal health targets, including the Sustainable Development Goals on maternal and child health.
